This choir was originally formed for the purpose of performing the music of Jewish composers and to participate in the 1998 Zimriyah Choral Festival that was held at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Following its return from Jerusalem, the choir elected to maintain its existence and expand its repertoire and mission. LAZC performed extensively throughout Southern California and was invited in November, 2000, to participate in a special performance of Leonard Bernstein's Symphony #3, "The Kaddish," together with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra in Nuremberg, Germany. The project, entitled "Sounds of Healing," was led by the LAZC and brought together 200 singers from Los Angeles, Toronto and Tel Aviv to perform this important work before enthusiastic and appreciative audiences in Los Angeles, at UCLA's Royce Hall, and in Nuremberg, before sold-out houses of more than 5000 people at Meistersinger Halle. |
